Start with federal income rules

IRS Publication 525 explains that prizes and awards can be taxable income and discusses gambling winnings separately. The label used by a platform does not by itself decide the tax result for a particular person.

Cash and noncash prizes can require different valuation records. State tax rules may also apply and can differ from federal treatment.

Keep a usable record

Save the operator name, account statements, redemption dates, amounts received, payment confirmations, promotion terms, and any tax forms. Keep separate records for social-coin purchases and actual prizes rather than treating a wallet screen as an accounting statement.

Download records before closing an account. A clear timeline makes professional advice and return preparation easier.

Forms do not replace your own review

An operator may issue a tax information form when reporting rules apply. Thresholds and form types can change, and the absence of a form does not necessarily mean no income must be reported.

Use the current IRS instructions for the relevant tax year. Do not rely on a social post, an old threshold, or another user's return.

When to get professional help

Ask a credentialed tax professional if amounts are material, records are incomplete, multiple states are involved, you received noncash prizes, or you are unsure how the activity should be characterized.

SweepOffers does not prepare returns, classify a reader's activity, or provide individualized tax advice.
